Armando Broja signed a new contract last week, with the expectation that that would seal his place as a player Thomas Tuchel will rely on this season.
Earlier in the summer there had been strong rumours that he would be on the way out, but some appearances off the bench, plus the new deal, pointed towards a role at least as a rotation option for the team.
This week has been a real reality check for the Albanian. A talented academy prospect, he’s seen a 33 year old signed to play ahead of him, and indeed just days later Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has gone into the starting lineup for the game against Dinamo Zagreb, a match Broja looked locked in to start just days ago.
He’d better get used to this treatment, it’s the same that every youngster gets at Chelsea, and the battle for starts begins here. He will get chances off the bench, he’s just got to take them.
