Joe Cole still works with Chelsea, so it’s impressive to see him stick his neck out like this.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s Podcast, the former Chelsea winger discussed the shock sacking of Thomas Tuchel, and was happy to admit that he thought it was a bad decision.
“How do I think it was handled? Firstly, I’m happy to say I think it was the wrong decision to get rid of Tuchel,” said Cole in quotes picked up by Football.London.
“He connected with the Chelsea fans, he won trophies, he was in a difficult period that’s for sure but I think getting rid of him… there’s no good way to get rid of a manager – I don’t buy into how it was handled. For the decision, I think it was wrong.”
That’s very much in line with what most fans thought. Despite some bad form and a definite sense that things weren’t as they should be, everyone was keen to see Tuchel given plenty of time to turn things around, and people were convinced he could do it.
Like most of us, Cole is by no means anti-Graham Potter, he just sees like the rest of us that bringing him in to replace a prematurely sacked Tuchel will only make things more difficult for the new man.
Let’s hope the new man can make us forget all about Tuchel, starting with a win tomorrow night against Salzburg in the Champions League.
