Chelsea are in “advanced talks” with RB Salzburg’s director of football Cristophe Freund over becoming the club’s new sporting director.
That’s according to Tom Roddy of the Times and various other sources, who have all been briefed on that subject today it seems.
The timing is spot on – Todd Boehly was at a business conference today where he spoke openly in admiration of the Red Bull model, and also admitted that he didn’t want input on the football side, and would be working to appoint someone to do that as soon as possible.

Boehly admired RB model: “We’ve talked about having a multi-club model. Red Bull have Salzburg and Leipzig in the Champions League. I want to continue building out the footprint." #cfc

Freund has done a superb job with Salzburg, and while he doesn’t have the name of a Michael Edwards or Luis Campos, looks like a real up and coming star in that department.
It also just happens that we’re playing Salzburg in the Champions League tomorrow night.
We wonder if Freund will be in London for that game, by any chance?
