Chelsea Women star Fran Kirby has had some interesting quotes in the Daily Mail about new owner Todd Boehly’s arrival, and his plans for Chelsea as a whole.
Clearly the new boss thinks of the club as a whole and not just a men’s team with a Women’s team and some youth sides thrown in. That was clear from the start, and the story Kirby told about meeting him says even more.
“We got invited to the game at Stamford Bridge the other day and sat with Todd and met people on the board, and they just seemed super, super positive about women’s football and women’s sport in general,” the goal machine said.
“They came down to the facilities and said this is not acceptable for a club like Chelsea. We have always got on with it. We’ve had a moan here and there when we’ve had to come up here at 7am to use the pool — I’m not a morning person! — but we’ve got stuff done, won some trophies.”
That’s a typically Kirby way of putting it.
It’s great to hear Boehly will be taking that side of things seriously. He’s picked up a lot of flak in the media in the last week – some fairly and some unfairly – but his intentions are clearly to make both teams as competitive as possible, without wasting loads of money.
That’s fine by us, and we’re sure the women’s players will enjoy having their own facilities to use.
