There are strong whispers around in the last few days that Chelsea’s interest in Josko Gvardiol didn’t end when the summer window shut.
It seems that we’re intent on signing him, despite our failure with a 490m bid in August, and despite the departure of then coach Thomas Tuchel.
Following that bid, the Croatian defender signed a new contract at Leipzig. The reports are that that contract included a release clause for €50m, but that makes no sense to us.
If Chelsea had just had a €90m offer rejected, why on earth would they then agree to a far lower clause? No matter how much they wanted to hold on to him for this season, it surely wasn’t worth €40m to them, and they would have just taken the money if they couldn’t agree a higher release clause.
On the other hand, as unlikely as it all seems from the outside, you never quite know exactly what is going on behind the scenes.
