Conor Gallagher substitution explained by Graham Potter

Conor Gallagher was taken off in the first half tonight, and understandably there was the assumption that he was injured.

There was some confusion however, as nobody saw him take a knock or go down hurt. That confusion was cleared up after the game by Chelsea manager Graham Potter, who explained that it was illness that had caused him to make the early change.

That’s disappointing, but does at least take away the paranoia that there’s a potentially serious injury here.

An illness is usually at worst just a couple of days out, and this Saturday’s match against Man U is still a possibility for the midfielder.

He might not have been selected for that game anyway – there’s a lot of competition in central midfield at the moment, even with N’Golo Kante out injured. Carney Chukwuemeka played a similar role to Gallagher’s when he came on later in the game and looked excellent.
