Benfica are trying to complete a deal for Enzo Fernandez’s replacement which then should allow the Argentinian midfielder to seal his switch to Chelsea, reports Jacob Steinberg.
It is unclear who the replacement could be but there have been suggestions in Argentina that it is Alan Varela from Boca Juniors, who has a 15 million euro release clause.
Reports are different between English sources and Portugese sources surrounding Enzo Fernandez and the situation is constantly developing and fluid. Chelsea so far have given no indication of triggering Enzo’s release clause, rather trying to negotiate a deal in instalments.
Behdad Egbhali is currently in London working on the deal according to Matt Law whilst other Chelsea officials are thought to already be in Portugal, the whole board seems unanimous on relentlessly trying for Enzo but the facts are that Rui Costa is an incredibly tough negotiator and Chelsea fans will be hoping the news of Benfica trying to complete a deal for a replacement is true.
