Man City 2-0 Chelsea: Blues outclassed in Cup

Chelsea met a Manchester City side in dominant form as they were knocked out the FA Cup at the Etihad.

Goals from Stefan Jovetic and Samir Nasri ensured a miserable evening for Mourinho’s men as they failed to even register a shot on target.

There was no repeat of the incredible display two weeks ago that saw Chelsea leave with a 0-1 victory as the Blues put in a frustrating display, albeit against a side who had no midweek game due to postponement.

Chelsea made just one change from the side that won at the Etihad, due to the injury to John Terry. To the surprise of many, Gary Cahill was deemed fit to start.

Javi Garcia made his return for City from the start and Samir Nasri returned, from the bench, to score the goal that killed of Chelsea and any hope they had.

Manchester City took the lead on 16 minutes through Stefan Jovetic thanks to a little help from the inside of the post, after a precise finish by the Montenegro international across Petr Cech.

Chelsea were hard-done-by for City’s second goal as David Silva appeared to be marginally offside before setting up a tap in for Samir Nasri.

However, Jose Mourinho stated this decision had little effect on the game:

“City played much better than us and deserved to win… even with a perfect referee team would Chelsea win the game? No… we were never close to scoring”

The Chelsea manager made it clear in midweek that he was of the opinion that Yaya Toure should be serving an FA ban. This is following a kick on Ricky van Wolfswinkel last weekend.

The Ivorian rubbed salt into the Portuguese man’s wounds with a dominant performance that saw him win ITV’s MOTM award. This is contrary to a fortnight ago when he was dominated by Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic.

The Chelsea manager was quick to deflect criticism away from his players despite many below-par performances in the Chelsea side:

“I don’t want to talk about individual players. We are a team. We win, we lose.”

Chelsea were once again without influential captain John Terry, and it was clear, as the Blues conceded as many goals in the game as they previously had for the whole of this year. The Englishman was missing his third game through injury.

The Chelsea manager stated he was keen to now look ahead to what competitions his side remain, but admitted he would have had no problems with the added games of the FA Cup had his side remained in the competition.

It would have been quite a feat for Chelsea to have beaten the formidable force of Manchester City three times in a season, and this final domestic meeting proved too much for the London side.

Both teams of course remain in the Champions League, so in this unbelievable season, do not rule out the Mourinho-Pellegrini rivalry being re-fulled in the biggest competition of them all.

  1. Nice article Billy 😉 Yes outclassed but Jose warned us already and let’s focus on PLT and champions league. Everton is coming up next Week end. We’ll play them at the bridge, let’s take the 3 points. We must go forward.

    1. Thank you! Agreed – Jose said he did not expect silverware this season so anything is a bonus. Must move on. Important stage of the season.
