Luke Shaw transfer speculation

Luke Shaw, the latest prodigy of the Southampton academy, has become the subject of a multi-million pound bid from Chelsea according to reports in theDaily Star.

The St Mary’s outfit have endured a tumultuous last few days as Chairman Nicola Cortese, has handed in his resignation.

It is conceivable that this would affect all currently employed by the club, with Mauricio Potchettino’s future now hanging precariously.

Shaw is yet another successful product of Southampton’s famed youth academy, having brought through the likes of Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott, now it is rumoured Shaw will be the next player to leave for a high profile club.

The sale of Luke Shaw would certainly benefit the club financially, but it is reported that a £15 million offer plus out-of-favour left-back Ryan Bertrand was not enough to convince the Southampton hierarchy.

It seems inevitable that the highly-rated 18 year old will go sooner or later, with many big premier league clubs rumoured to be vying for his services, including Chelsea and Manchester United.

Regardless of the boardroom instability, Southampton will want financial recompense and a suitable replacement for Shaw, who has been a key player for them since their return to the Premier League.

With Mourinho seemingly questioning Ashley Cole’s long term future at the club, and with the Southampton currently undergoing somewhat of a crisis, journalist of the Daily Star, David Woods writes:

Saints told the Blues they have no intention of letting Shaw go for £15m in cash plus £6m-rated Ryan Bertrand. But with Jose Mourinho having doubts over Cole’s future, the Blues are set to turn up the pressure.”

In what would be an incredibly shrewd business move, it may well prove to be a good time for José Mourinho to test the resolve of the clubs new chairman.

Southampton fans will be hoping that if Shaw does leave that they get a suitable price and replacement for the 18 year old, for the new chairman of the Saints it’s a could well be a less than ideal start to life at Saint Mary’s,
