Toure named African Footballer of the Year

Man City bulldozer Yaya Toure has been crowned African Footballer of the Year for the third time in a row at a ceremony in Lagos.

He managed to pip fellow countryman Didier Drogba and our own Chelsea goal machine Jon Obi Mikel to win the gong on Thursday night.

Toure becomes the second player to win the prestigious CAF award for a third year in a row after Samuel Eto’o also achieved the same feat between 2003 and 2005.

National team coaches from the Confederation of African Football cast their vote to decide the winner and it was former Barcelona man Toure who claimed yet another honour in his illustrious career.

Mikel Obi was highly favoured by many Nigerians who saw his exploits and team successes with club and country in 2013 as the best credentials to claim the award which has eluded Nigerian footballers since Kanu Nwankwo won it in the year 1999.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi was a popular choice for the Coach of the Year award at the ceremony in his homeland, having masterminded his country’s Africa Cup of Nations success in South Africa in addition to securing World Cup qualification.
