However, Jose Mourinho has followed up spats with Arsenal and Man City by claiming that the Catalan giants are considerably weaker than previous years.
The Chelsea manager told ITV:
“By history, Barcelona is the favourite, but this Barcelona, this season, is showing that it is not the same in previous years.”
Of course, Barcelona were Mourinho’s bitterest rivals during his time at Real Madrid, as he partook in a famous rivalry with Pep Guardiola.
Mourinho also worked at Barcelona for four years as an assisstant manager, which makes his infamous rivalry with the side all the more intriguing.
The Portuguese claimed that, despite the array of talent that Barcelona boast, City have a great opportunity:
“Of course they have Messi, he is special. But I think this is the worst Barcelona of many, many years – so City have a chance.”
This extraordinary claim is ahead of the return of Champions League football for the round-of-16 ties, in which Chelsea travel to play Galatasaray in their first leg next Wednesday.
