Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea side have been handed a boost in the timing of Fernando Torres’ return from injury.
The Spaniard is putting Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Galatasaray down as a target to return from the groin injury that kept him out of the 4-0 win against Tottenham last Saturday.
Torres was named in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI for the London derby against Spurs but was replaced by Samuel Eto’o when he picked up a slight knock during the warm up.
He has received intensive treatment from Chelsea’s medical team to heal the injury and hopes to be training before the end of the week, but presumably will not be ready for Chelsea’s trip to Aston Villa on Saturday evening.
The tie against Galatasaray currently stands at 1-1 in Chelsea’s favour following a tight affair in Istanbul, with Fernando Torres giving the blues the crucial early lead in that game, and therefore the crucial away goal.
Chelsea’s striker problems have been evident this season but with Demba Ba scoring 2 quickfire goals against Tottenham and Samuel Eto’o seemingly finding some form, the return of Fernando Torres comes at a time when Mourinho could somewhat confidently pick any of his three front men for his starting XI.
The returning Fernando Torres has 9 goals in all competitions this season and had a positive start to 2014 scoring 2 goals in as many starts, but an injury plagued couple of months have killed the strikers’ momentum dead.
However, the striker’s form in Europe this season has been his real selling-point which would point towards, if available, a start on Tuesday night.
Tuesday’s game also ties in with Chelsea legend Didier Drogba’s return to Stamford Bridge with his Galatasaray teammates.
Despite the Ivorian once describing Fernando Torres as “the future” of Chelsea Football Club, many Chelsea fans believe this will be the final season of the Spaniard’s troubled Chelsea career.
However, a goal on Tuesday night to mark his return from injury and a few more to fire Chelsea to the Premier League title and his time at Chelsea may seem like a successful stint.
