PFA Awards: Chelsea trio rewarded for fine season

Three Chelsea players, including the masterful Eden Hazard, have been included in the PFA’s Premier League Team of the Year.

Petr Cech and Gary Cahill, along with Hazard, were included in a star-studded lineup of the Premier League players who have performed well enough to merit a place in the Professional Footballers’ Association’s TOTY.

The trio have been key in firing Chelsea to a possible Champions League final and also challenging for the title throughout the campaign.

Questions will be asked, however, over the exclusion of Cahill’s centre back partner John Terry, who many would argue has been Chelsea’s best player this season and certainly a contender for the League’s defender of the year.

Many fans are also unhappy about the absence of Cesar Azpilicueta in the team, after the Spaniard has had a fine season despite playing out of position for the Blues.

Eden Hazard has got 17 goals and 10 assists in 46 appearances for Chelsea this season and has often been the Blues’ brightest attacking option, especially on the quick counter attack. The Belgian has 62% shot accuracy, while League’s top scorer Luis Suarez has 53%.

Gary Cahill has surely been one of the most underrated players of the season: according to Squawka, the England international has had a total of zero defensive errors this season, while Vincent Kompany has committed 0.13 errors per game. He’s also made 210 clearances this season.

Petr Cech is the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in the Premier League this term. Chelsea have 17 altogether, for 16 of which Petr Cech has been the man keeping the Chelsea goal safe. He has contributed to the League’s safest defence: Chelsea have conceded just 24 in the League.

The stats certainly seem to back up the trio’s inclusion in the team, and they can go one better by helping their club to European success this season, too.
