Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o has branded Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho “a fool” for questioning his age earlier in the season.
The comments come after Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho joked about Samuel Eto’o’s age following a dry spell in terms of goals from his Chelsea strikers.
“The problem at Chelsea is that we are lacking a goalscorer. I have Eto’o but he is 32, possibly 35, who knows?” joked the Chelsea manager in late February.
However, speaking to African Football, it was apparent that Samuel Eto’o had taken the comments more to heart than maybe many expected.
Speaking before he boarded a flight to the Ivory Coast, Chelsea’s highest scoring striker of the season had this to say of his manager’s comments:
“Today, I am 33 years old. And it is not because a fool called me an old man that you must believe it.”
“You may have noticed that the old man was better than the youngsters”, the striker added.
The comments would suggest that Eto’o has little intention of staying at the Blues, with his contract expiring this summer after just a year in West London.
The 33-year-old continued, stating that he was certain he would be playing at the highest level once again next campaign:
“I have regained the joy of the Champions League and I am going to carry on playing in the Champions League. Where? I am not going to tell you.”
Eto’o’s Chelsea future remains in the balance, like legends Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard, who’s contracts are also up this summer.
However, with news of an agreed fee for Diego Costa and also the returning Romelu Lukaku, to go along with these recent comments, Eto’o’s future certainly appears to be away from Stamford Bridge.
