Maradona: Jose Mourinho was right to drop Casillas

Argentina legend Diego Maradona believes Iker Casillas is no longer a world class goalkeeper and says that Jose Mourinho was right to drop the Spaniard during his time at Real Madrid.

Two costly errors by Casillas handed Netherlands an emphatic 5-1 win over Spain during their World Cup opener last Friday. Questions were raised after the game weather Del Bosque should turn to David De Gea to replace him in goal.

Casillas almost cost his club the La Decima after he was caught out in the Champions League final for Diego Godin’s opener.

His poor performance led Jose Mourinho to drop him in favour of Diego Lopez during his final year at Bernabeu; a stance that new manager Carlo Ancelotti also took apart from cup competitions.

Mourinho was heavily criticised for dropping Casillas, which is one of the main reasons he had to leave the club last summer.

Diego Maradona has now defended JoseÂ’s actions and said that he felt the Real stopper was no longer one of the top players in his position.

“He had the worst game I’ve ever seen in my life. It reminds me of what my friend Mourinho told everyone about him.”

“Casillas wasn’t the right keeper and he paid for that. He had to leave, but in the end it turns out that Mourinho was right.”

Maradona’s words and Casillas’ performances in two of the biggest games of the season leaves Jose Mourinho being justified in his decision.
