PSG: We thought we’d beaten Chelsea

PSG captain Thiago Silva has admitted that he and his teammates thought that Chelsea were beaten in last year’s dramatic Champions League quarter-final.

The French champions held a 3-2 aggregate lead going into the final few minutes of the game, apparently prompting many of their players to become complacent about reaching the semi-finals.

Thiago Silva told Nissan:

In the last match [vs Chelsea] we thought our team was already qualified.

Andre Schurrle had scored but that wasn’t enough to send the Blues through, but an 87th minute bundled Demba Ba effort put Chelsea ahead on away goals.

The over-confident Paris side couldn’t salvage anything in stoppage time and Chelsea booked a place in the last four at their expense.

Silva clearly still hurts over that night, but adds that footballing lessons have been learned by his side:

One important thing to always remember is that until the referee stops, the match is not done yet.

The sides face again on Tuesday evening, this time in the first knockout round, with Laurent Blanc’s side looking for revenge and Mourinho aiming for a double over the French giants.
