Premier League legend backs Costa for award

All-time Premier League top scorer Alan Shearer has tipped Chelsea’s Diego Costa to win this season’s Golden Boot.

The forward, who has netted 17 goals in 21 League appearances this season, is currently level at the top of the leaderboards with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero; an impressive season so far sees Harry Kane close behind on 16 goals.

Costa opened his Premier League account on the opening day of the season in a single goal in the 3-1 win over Burnley. He went on to net a brace against Everton, before a clinical first hat-trick in a home victory over Swansea, earning him the August Barclays Player of the Month award.

‘If I was really forced to choose one [a Golden Boot winner] I’d have to go for Costa. I love his battling qualities as well as his ability to score goals and so I’d love to have him in my team.

‘I like Costa, I like how he will go and stand on defenders, how he’ll have a scrap, but in a good way. He is ideally suited for the Premier League and to Chelsea and the way Mourinho wants to play.’

He can play the game but can scrap, which is not easy because you’re getting battered week in, week out.

Shearer, who set the all-time record with 260 goals, went on to say: ‘He’s very good at having a battle with the two centre-halves, but he’s equally good at scoring goals. He still wants to run in behind, or even short, and he doesn’t mind defenders marking him. In fact, he probably enjoys defenders marking him and getting tight to him.’
