England’s loss is Chelsea’s gain

England’s loss has been Chelsea’s gain since John Terry decided to retire from international football to focus on his club career with Chelsea, his form has been outstanding.

He is currently one of the best centre backs in the EPL and he has been ever present in the current league campaign for the blues.

“There are a lot more games now than there used to be if we stay in big competitions and you never know, the manager might even add another player in the summer.”

It is all about competition and about the football club and winning things, moving in the right direction, and if I am part of that then great, but if not and the club is succeeding then the manager is getting it right as well.

Terry’s new 1 year contract extension is a great boost for Chelsea and speaks volumes of his commitment to the club. Chelsea is bigger than any player, and any other player playing as well as Terry might have opted to move to a club offering a 2 or 3 year deal. Chelsea need Terry for another 3 seasons, but the Club policy is to offer 1 year deals to players over the age of 30. I hope we will be celebrating another contract extension for the blues captain next season.

Terry’s role in the team is bigger than it was 4 years ago for 3 reasons.

  • He is currently the best centre back in the premier league and Chelsea need 8 more top performances from him to clinch the title. Chelsea will also need him to reproduce this form next year to retain the title.
  • There is no substitute for experience. Chelsea have a very young squad the younger players need a leader to turn to.
  • Terry is already obtaining his coaching batches and helping out with the Chelsea under 16’s. This is a big win for the Chelsea youth system in having the only player to make it out of a system guiding players to also make it.

“Now I just want to keep winning major trophies and being in the mix for them. At the start of my career that is what you want to do, you want to play as many games as you can and become captain.”

I have done that, I am still captain and I am still hungry to win things and hopefully that passion never goes but if it did it is time to call it a day.

“It is still there the way it was when I was 17 or 18 and breaking through into the first team, and as long as that passion remains and I am capable of playing I will try to stay as long as I can.”

I hope ther other top players at Chelsea over the age off 30 will follow Terry’s example and agree to a 1 year extension, we still need Ivanovic, Cech and Drogba.
