Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admits his side were fortunate to come out with the three points on Sunday, at Loftus Road vs. Queens Park Rangers.
Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas slotted home in the 88th minute to help the league-leaders maintain their seven-point lead at the top intact, but the Portuguese was honest enough to say that a 0-0 draw would have been the right outcome.
“Yes, [we were lucky to win], it was a typical 0-0. I think we played well in the circumstances. The opponent didn’t let us play better,” Mourinho said after the game.
I’m very happy with my team because we always kept good emotional control, we never lost balance.
“If we had to go home with a point we would have gone home with a point. We were always very stable and we scored at the crucial moment.”
“We controlled them very well, and we kept them far from the box which is where Austin and Zamora are killers. They were very well organised defensively, and they gave us a difficult match in terms of our creation.”
I feel sorry for them because they fought hard to try to get the point. It was a very difficult game. One point would be fair, but these three points are fantastic for us.
“It’s difficult to play here – the pitch is small and slow, and 1.30pm is maybe not the best time to develop a game with intensity.”
It was a very defensive game from their point of view so it was difficult to create – for Fabregas, for Willian and for Hazard.
“We played with our striker that is the best one as a target man. Remy and Diego Costa are more dangerous attacking spaces and making runs behind defenders, so we had to adapt our game.”
When asked why French forward Loic Remy was left out the squad, Mourinho explained: “[Loic] Remy has a small injury. I think he should be available for the next game [against Manchester United].”
