Inter interested in Mikel

According to the Daily Mail, Inter Milan are interested in making a swoop for Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel, as they continue their hunt for a defensive midfielder.

During much of his time at Chelsea, Mikel has been in the starting XI fairly consistently. However, the Nigerian international dropped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge when Nemanja Matic arrived in West London, for his second stint with the Blues. Matic is a consistent player, so playing time for Mikel is limited, so a departure is possible. When Mikel was selected in the team at various points in the season, his impact was limited.

Also, Brazilian international Ramires looks poised to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge himself. This makes Mikel’s place on the pitch that bit less frequent. Since Mourinho returned to Chelsea in 2013, Ramires’ attitude has impressed him. In appreciation, the Portuguese boss is set to give the ex-Benfica man a new contract.

Despite all the exit rumours, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is keen to keep the 28-year-old at the Premier League champions.

Inter’s first name on their midfielder list is Galatasary’s Felipe Melo, who has also been linked to Spanish side Sevilla.

Mikel has been at Chelsea since 2006, when he signed from Lyn Oslo.
