Roman Abramovich is ready to step in and help his side by flying to Russia to hold talks with Zenit St Petersburg, regarding Belgian central midfielder, Axel Witsel.
Alexander Dyukov Valeryevich, Zenit’s owner, is said to be good friends with Abramovich, and this is something that could speed up a potential deal for the man who would be linking up with international team-mates Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois.
Belgian media outlet RTBF are suggesting that the friendship between the two owners will be one of the most important things heading into negotiations. The deal is being suggested as worth £24m.
Jose Mourinho has targetted the Belgian as a star who could replaced the reportedly departing John Obi Mikel.
In recent days, AC Milan are another club that have been linked with Witsel’s services, but club CEO Adriano Galliani have confirmed that the Serie A side’s interest has expired and have moved on to other potential targets. Galliani said,
No [we won’t sign Witsel], that’s enough now. The only objective left is a central defender.
