Do Chelsea need any more new signings?

Chelsea sealed their fifth Premier League trophy last term and achieved a record breaking run at the top of the table.

Their rivals are attempting to bridge the gap this summer by making high profile, big money signings. This rush for new players has caused frustration among some Chelsea fans due to the relatively conservative approach Mourinho has taken in the transfer market so far.

We explain why Chelsea may not need to make any more new signings in order to retain the title.

Mourinho has already found a winning formula

It wasn’t always pretty last season, but in the end Chelsea got the job done. The question is, why would Mourinho want to change things dramatically when they finished last season so far ahead of the competition?

The balance between defence and attack last season made Chelsea incredibly resilient and with the players now one year older and wiser, the chances are they will be even harder to beat.

The other teams making significant changes are inevitably going to have some issues while their new players are bedding in. This means that Chelsea’s pre-established, unified squad could create an unassailable lead in the opening months.

Chelsea will have far more money available to spend next year

With the massive influx of additional TV money being given to English clubs next summer, it may be in Chelsea’s best interests to avoid the current circus of Premier League panic buying.

Mourinho mentioned in an interview this week that despite his ongoing interest, Chelsea aren’t currently in a position to bid for Paul Pogba. With the extra funds which will become available after the 15/16 season ends, that situation is likely to change.

If Chelsea will be able to compete for the brightest lights in world football next year, it may not be worthwhile adding lesser players to the squad this year.

Chelsea’s youngsters can add real value to the squad

Chelsea currently have some fantastic young players on the cusp of breaking into the first team.

Dominic Solanke, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Bertrand Traore have all demonstrated their qualities recently and if they can live up to expectations this season, a few senior first teamers may find themselves under pressure.

Deciding to dip into the transfer market can be a bit of a minefield, as it’s often difficult to predict whether a player will be able to bed in properly until they arrive. There’s no such problem with youth team players. Jose will be very familiar with the qualities of the young players who have been operating within the club.

So, if Chelsea don’t buy new players, can they really win it again?

Chelsea are more than capable of winning the title again this season, even without new signings. If they can recapture the spirit, energy and courage they displayed last term, they could win by an even bigger margin.

The West Londoners have a young, hungry squad who made great progress last term. If everything goes to plan and Diego Costa manages to stay fully fit throughout the season, they will undoubtedly be competing on all fronts.
