Terry: Mourinho is the best signing

Chelsea captain John Terry believes the Blues will have made the best signing of the summer when manager Jose Mourinho puts pen to paper to extend his contract at the club until 2019.

Chelsea have been relatively quiet thus far in the transfer window compared to their rivals, but Terry insists Mourinho’s commitment to building a legacy at Stamford Bridge will play in the minds of their Premier League rivals, despite a number of clubs splashing the cash on transfers.

Both Manchester sides have spent over £60m each, with United signing Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and Memphis Depay, and City recruiting Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts.

The Blues meanwhile have signed Asmir Begovic for £8m from Stoke, as a replacement for Petr Cech, and Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan as a replacement for Didier Drogba.

But Terry is unfazed by their rivals’ summer spending, and believes Mourinho extending his contract alongside the plans to extend the size of Stamford Bridge is terrible news for other managers.

He has a lot of great records against clubs and other managers. It must play on their minds. When other big teams sign big players you do think: ‘Oh.’ But it must be the same for them when Mourinho signs his contract at the club and extends. It’s great news for the club but terrible news for everybody else because the other managers know that he finds ways to beat teams.

He knows people inside out, on and off the pitch. Whether you’re a player or manager, he does his groundwork. He knows everything. He certainly gives you confidence when you do the specific work on the training pitch, the tactics room and in the dressing room before matches.

We go into games fully aware of other team’s strengths, their weaknesses as well. But also our weaknesses and ways we can be got at if we don’t do things the right way.

So he prepares us with every situation and making sure we’re ready. It’s excellent news for the squad of players because it brings stability to the club. The fans love him because of what he’s done.

For the whole place stability is key for us, which we have missed over the previous five or six years. I was delighted to have him back and now I am delighted he will stay for a few more years.

It’s stable here, it’s calm. But the manager still pushes us every single day. You see him on the training pitch in pre-season. He is leading from the front. He demands the very best from us on a daily basis which is why for me he is the best in the world by a long way.

He will keep striving, keep pushing players and getting the best out of them individually and collectively.
