Chelsea bid £30m for Stones – Everton want £40m

Following the completed signing of Baba Rahman,  Chelsea have reportedly tabled a third improved offer for Everton defender John Stones of around £30 million, as the Blues look to improve a defence that has looked shaky early on this season.

This most recent bid comes after the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, where the decision to substitute John Terry made the need for defensive reinforcements all the more important before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

However, reports from the Merseyside club suggest Martinez will look to utilise Chelsea’s growing desperation and hold out for an even greater offer, even up to £40 million; a price tag that would see the youngster become the most expensive British transfer for a defender of all time.

Whilst Everton will want even more than the original valuation of £34 million, Mourinho could yet view this is as value for money; Stones is a player with the potential to play an integral role in Mourinho’s plans for the next 10 years and recent displays have made his signing all the more important.
