John Stones hands in transfer request

Everton defender John Stones has shocked the club by handing in a transfer request amid interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Chelsea’s pursuit of the 21 year-old has been far from secret throughout the transfer window, and it is clear now that Stones wants his move to Stamford Bridge to progress.

Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has been insistent that the England defender will remain at Goodison park but the club’s resolve is now set to be tested by the player himself.

Everton can yet reject the request, but today’s news will music to the ears of Jose Mourinho as he looks to sure up his defence after a shaky start to the season.

The Blues have reportedly already had three bids for the centre back rejected during the transfer window, with the latest reaching the dizzy heights of £30 million.

Reports have suggested that Everton would hold out for £40 million, but Stones’ desire to leave may bring the price tag down slightly, and will undoubtedly encourage Chelsea in their pursuit.

Mourinho is, however, likely to face competition from Manchester United for Stones’ signature, but reports are indicating that the defender wants a move to West London.
