‘Operation Pedro’: How Chelsea hijacked United transfer

It seems even Cesc Fabregas’ girlfriend is notching up assists at Chelsea these days…

‘Operation Pedro’, masterminded by key figures within the Chelsea Football Club hierarchy (and Daniella Semaan, girlfriend of Cesc Fabregas) turned the Barcelona winger from Manchester United target to Chelsea new boy in 24 hours.

The Spaniard signed for the Blues on Thursday in one of the more unexpected moves of the window as Chelsea look to bolster their squad after a lackluster start to the season.

The Telegraph report that while Ed Woodward dithered in his negotiations with the Catalan club, Marina Granovskaia, Chelsea director, made secret contact with Barca.

Two direct chats with Jose Mourinho and Spanish teammate and former Barcelona man Cesc Fabregas then convinced Pedro to snub United and make the move to Stamford Bridge.

To rub salt in United wounds, it is also reported that Victor Valdes convinced the 28-year old to avoid Old Trafford, using the anecdote of his rocky relationship with manager Louis Van Gaal to help Pedro avoid similar circumstances.

After Pedro’s wife, Carolina Martin, was convinced to embrace London life by Semaan (the pair are good friends from Fabregas’ time at Barca), the move was all set to be complete in the capital on Thursday lunchtime.

With Woodward’s whereabouts unknown, but presumably still in Spain wondering how United lost out on their man, Chelsea confirmed the deal.

It may not quite be 007, but Chelsea’s mission to steal Pedro’s signature from their Premier League rivals was certainly extravagant, and efficient.

Pedro is likely to play a part as Chelsea seek their first three points of the season away to West Brom on Sunday.
