Newcastle vs Chelsea – Match Preview

Preview

Chelsea will be looking to win back to back Premier League games this weekend when they travel to St. James’ Park to play Newcastle – a ground we have struggled at in recent visits. Jose Mourinho has also never won there in the Premier League.

Newcastle have started the season dreadfully and are yet to record a win in the Premier League, they lie 19th in the table. Their only win so far came in the League Cup 2nd round against Northampton. Earlier this week they were then knocked out by Sheffield Wednesday at home. Newcastle fans made their thoughts clear at the full time whistle with the majority of the stadium booing their side. They will therefore be desperate for a result this weekend.

Chelsea have hit a spell of good form at the moment. After the worst start to a season by current Premier League champions after 5 games, Chelsea have gone on to win 3 from 3. We have looked much better in our last few games and have played with much more confidence playing our own game. However, no matter what form Chelsea are in, Newcastle away is always difficult. Last season Chelsea flew out the blocks and at the start of December we were top of the league and still remained unbeaten. Many pundits even considered that we could go unbeaten all season. We were in stunning form. But Newcastle were the first side to beat us therefore ending our unbeaten run.

Hopefully Newcastle won’t continue their impressive form against us at St. James’ Park tomorrow though. In order to win we will need to produce a tactically disciplined display and not give anything for the fans to cheer about and get behind their team otherwise the task will be a lot harder.

Chelsea are 5/1 favourites to beat Newcastle who haven’t won this season yet – easy money! GO! http://buff.ly/1jepV57

Match details

Saturday, 26th September, 5:30 PM (UK Time) at St. James’ Park on Sky Sports 1.

Recent form and previous meetings

Newcastle are currently in shocking form and are low on confidence. In their last 5 games in all competitions they have won 1 and lost 4. They have failed to win a Premier League game so far and have only collected 2 points, they therefore lie in 19th.

Chelsea’s last 5 games in all competitions have seen us win 3 and lose 2, our 3 wins coming in our last 3 games. We enter the game with our best form of the current season and high on confidence but we haven’t won away from home in the league in over a month.

Chelsea and Newcastle share equal form in our last 10 games. Both sides have won 4 each with the other 2 matches resulting in draws.

Our form away from home against Newcastle is also equal. In our last 10 visits to St. James’ Park, Newcastle have won 4 like Chelsea, meaning the remaining 2 were draws. However Chelsea have lost all of their last 3 visits to Newcastle.

Team news

Chelsea will be without Diego Costa who is serving the second match of his three match suspension. Mourinho therefore has a selection dilemma upfront. Both Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao are battling to start in the strikers role. Earlier today in his press conference Jose said he isn’t sure yet on who he will start the game with in Costa’s place. Mourinho also reported Willian is now available for selection after missing our last two games. He says there are no new injury concerns so it’s only Thibaut Courtois who remains injured.

Newcastle will be without Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse, both don’t return to training until Monday. Both Paul Dummett and Steven Taylor have hamstring injuries so the pair will miss tomorrow’s game too. Riviere, Marveaux, Haidara and Darlow are also all injured.  However they welcome back Aleksandar Mitrovic who has completed his suspension.
