Chelsea 2-0 Aston Villa: 5 things we learnt

Jose Mourinho would be relieved with this result after a frustrating spell in the Premier league that left his side 16th on the league table before the international break. His Chelsea side beat Aston Villa 2-0 in a game he desperately had to win to keep his job despite the club’s public backing after the 3-1 defeat to Southampton a fortnight ago.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek might not be the next John Terry

Chelsea fans have drooled over the emergence of an academy player rising through the ranks to make the first team at Stamford Bridge and Loftus-Cheek may have given the, hope, but his performance today wasn’t at all the best.

In all fairness, he was played out of position as he looked to be the number 10 ahead of Cesc Fabregas and Ramires. Jose is under pressure and he might not always call on the young player to help his side rescue points in desperate times and the 19-year-old’s half time substitution proved that.

Baba Rahman could be in Jose selection gray area

The former Augsburg defender did not impress in his first outing for Chelsea in the Premier League as he failed in his primary job – defending. The left full back was caught out by the Villa attack one too many times. It’s fair to say he’s is not a typical Jose Mourinho full back.

Arriving for £21.7 million will be the reason he won’t be sold right away, a few more chances when they arrive should be taken by the Ghana international, or he will face the exit from the club.

Jose sending ‘the proverbial kick in the backside’ message to Hazard

Eden Hazard was left out of the side to face Villa, a decision Jose defends as ‘tactical’. Willian and Pedro provided enough defensive cover to help Cezar Azpilicueta and Baba Rahman in the game.

There’s the Champions League game coming up and maybe Jose decided to rest his Belgian star player. Whatever the situation is with the selection, Hazard would now know he’s not untouchable and should improve.

The monkeys are off Diego Costa’s back

He took the first goal well and was lucky the second the goal went in after an not ended pass found the back of the net following a deflection by Alan Hutton. He worked his socks off for his side to help them come out of the miserable run of form and it worked.

He was illustrious, made great runs off the ball and contributed his fair share of defending. A gritty and unspectacular display was all Chelsea needed to get maximum points from the game.

Chelsea’s display not a beauty but efficient

Chelsea have been in such a poor run of form that three points from a total 10% possession will be welcome by Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese made changes to his regular starting eleven after he introduced Loftus-Cheek and Baba Rahman to replace Eden Hazard and the injured Branislav Ivanovic.

The opening minutes of the game was dull at times provided no clear cut chances as both sides tried to find good strides to ride on.

The two goals came as a result of mistakes by Villa’s defense but the result is a flattering one as is solid, and Jose won’t mind the three points in the bag.
