Chelsea target breaks Champions League record

Chelsea and Liverpool target Ruben Neves made UEFA Champions League history on Tuesday night after captaining his Porto side at the age of just 18 years and 221 days.

Rumours had linked Neves with a switch to England in the summer, and after the 18-year-old heavily impressed in Porto’s Champions League tie with Chelsea last month, more sources suggested Mourinho would be keen to force a move for the youngster at the next available opportunity.

Neves has been in Porto’s academy since the age of 8 and made his professional debut in August 2014, at the age of 17. Just over one year on from his introduction in to the Porto side, Neves broke the record as the youngest ever Champions League captain in Porto’s 2-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv on Tuesday night, surpassing the record previously held by Rafael van der Vaart since 2003.

Just two days after Neves broke the record, Sky Sports reported that Chelsea and Liverpool were amongst a host of clubs interested in the teenager’s signature.

At the age of 18, Neves has already made 42 appearances for the side that currently sit top of the Portuguese Liga and Group G in the Champions League.

We talk about technical and tactical talent, but Neves has extraordinary mental talents. He’s a player who sees the game with an extraordinary calmness and know what the game needs.
