Cahill: We are definitely going in the right direction

Chelsea defender, Gary Cahill has expressed his delightment after the 5-1 victory yesterday against MK Dons in the FA Cup 4th round. The victory ensured the Blues are through to the next round. They will now meet Premier League rivals, Manchester City but it also meant they have gone nine games without a defeat.

The 30 years old believes the appointment of Guus Hiddink is the beginning of new era and that his presence has increased the confidence of the players in general.

Obviously the first half of the season was a disaster but we look like we’re heading in the right direction at this moment in time. It was another good performance against MK Dons, not just the result but the way we moved the ball and everything that went with it.

That’s what we were looking for and hoping to do a lot earlier in the season. When you get results and don’t lose games it breeds confidence and everything kind of comes back. I wouldn’t say we’re totally there yet but we’re definitely going in the right direction.

Despite playing against a Championship opposition, Cahill was happy with the way the squad handled the game.

Against MK Dons it wasn’t Premier League opposition but I thought we did well. In the first half we had so many chances and it could have dead and buried. We’re creating more chances and getting more bodies in the box, which at the start of the season we probably weren’t doing. We look more dangerous.’

A lot of people have been chatting about The Chelsea defender’s future at the Bridge.

I did have a good chat with him, he was very approachable and it was beneficial, very positive. Obviously I want to be at the club. I signed a four-year contract a couple of months ago so that shows I want to be here. I’m settled here, I’ve had a lot of success here and my family are settled here. But ultimately, I feel like I need to play football matches. I’ve always been that way; it’s always been in my make-up to play a high percentage of games. I realise sometimes things go well, sometimes they don’t, but it’s very important for me to play football matches.

It’s a positive thing; you get people criticising players who are happy to sit on the bench and pick up their money but that’s certainly not me, I want to be out there and be a big part of things if I possibly can.
