Perhaps John Terry’s realtor can take the day off; Chelsea have offered their captain a one-year extension that we see his service to the club continue into the 2016/17 season.

Many fans questioned the thought behind not offering the life-long center back an extension earlier in the year, especially after the team found themselves bereft of care for the club — its history and supporters. Several supporters, including the Chelsea Fans Channel, even conducted demonstrations recently in a show of support for the “Captain, Leader, Legend.”
There are, however, two ways to read this situation:
- Chelsea, realizing the squad rebuilding project ahead, opted to retain the services of the skipper to insure a connection between the fans and players to the club. They actually listened to the fans this time!
- Chelsea, not wanting to be seen as the villain (think Bond:Spectre::Terry:Chelsea), offered a contract that John Terry would ultimately not accept. Whether it be due to reduced wages or a lack of guaranteed playing time, they aimed to produce a contract that amounts to an insult.
It’s very easy to be excited by today’s news — there’s been so few positive moments to come from this season. But its worth tempering that enthusiasm just in case he rejects the offer; not because he wants to leave Chelsea, but because Chelsea might not actually want him to stay.
In the game of contract chicken, it’s now John Terry’s turn.
