Courtois: I want to be at Chelsea and prove I’m one of the best in the world

As Chelsea prepare for their season opener against West Ham on Monday night, Thibaut Courtois sat down with Standard Sport in an exclusive interview where he spoke about last season’s disaster, the new Premier League season and his current status at the club.

The Belgian shot-stopper participated in an interview during the international break that wasn’t welcomed warmly by Chelsea fans after the English press reportedly mistranslated the quotes so Chelsea received an impression that the 24-year-old wanted to leave the club this summer.

Courtois was quick to be this rumors to bed by stating that he happy at the club and wants to prove that he is one of the best goalkeeper’s in the world:

I am very happy at Chelsea and want to stay. I will try to show in every game that I am one of the best keepers in the world.

The 24-year-old struggled to find any form last season after picking up 2 red cards and missing 1/3 of the season due to injury he picked up in September.

I know that I didn’t have the best of seasons but there are things that I have said in Belgium which have been misconstrued in England. It unfortunately has given the supporters the wrong impression.

It has put me and Chelsea in a bad light, that’s not good. I have never said I wanted to leave or anything. When it looks like I’m being put against the supporters, it’s not nice.

Courtois was left frustrated after his comments were misinterpreted by the fans but he hopes his recent performance will prove to the fans that he is one of the best in his position.

In pre-season I showed the quality I have. People may have had doubts about me.

But I think in the Euros for Belgium I showed I am one of the best and I want to continue showing that. My objective, together with the team, is to get back to winning the League and show that Chelsea are one of the best sides in the world.

With Chelsea welcoming West Ham to Stamford Bridge on Monday evening, Courtois is aware of the presence the visitors possess and will hope his side can get off to a good start and improve on last season’s 10th place finish.

They are a really good team and I expect a lot of them this season. It is a very, very hard game to start with.

It is very important we get off to a fast start to the League. After what happened last year, we need a good opening three-four games before the international break. We will then have something to build on and have some positive energy in the club.
