In an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca, Thibaut Courtois has claimed that he could leave Chelsea in 2018, with a return to Spain a real possibility.
Courtois claims he will make a decision in two years time whether to remain in West London, or leave on a free transfer the next summer.
The Belgian told Marca: “I have a contract at Chelsea for three seasons. In 2018, when I enter the final year of the contract, we will assess whether to renew or leave.”
Upon his return from loan at Atletico Madrid, we assumed we had found our number one goalkeeper for the next decade, but Courtois appears to have other plans, revealing: “when I left Spain it was clear that one day I would return there.”
After a 10th place finish in the Premier League last season, and sub-standard campaign from Courtois on a personal level, you would perhaps hope he would get his head down and focus on his football – instead he has quite openly discussed leaving the club.
It’s disrespectful to both Chelsea fans and the club who placed so much faith in him in ousting club-legend Petr Cech to guarantee him a starting role.
