Forza, Conte.

What Saturday’s results mean for Chelsea ahead of Boro clash

Saturday has proved to be quite a day for Chelsea in terms of rival teams dropping points. Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal all failed to win, leaving the Blues in a great position going into Sunday’s clash with Middlesbrough.

In wake of today’s favourable results, Chelsea News has had a look at all the possible outcomes from tomorrow’s game and what position they would leave us in.

Chelsea win

If we win tomorrow, we will move to the top of the Premier League table. That’s thanks to Liverpool being held by Southampton at St. Mary’s this afternoon. Jurgen Klopp’s side are level on 27 points with Manchester City, who beat Crystal Palace by two goals to one. Three points would take us to 28, and to the summit of English football.

Draw

The great thing about Arsenal being held to a draw by Manchester United today is that we can afford to do the same and remain in third spot. We’re currently level with the Gunners on 25 points, but have a better goal-difference. If we draw with Middlesbrough tomorrow, we’ll move up to 26 points, one ahead of Arsenal and one behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

Middlesbrough win

If all goes pear-shaped and Middlesbrough take all three points tomorrow, it’s by no means the end of the world. It would take a five-goal swing in Boro’s favour to see us drop below Arsenal and into fourth place. If the unthinkable happens, we will remain just two points behind Liverpool and Manchester City. We do, however, face Tottenham and Manchester City in our next two Premier League fixtures – we have to be picking up points in this sort of game.
