It’s never good to see your rivals strengthening, but in this case Manchester United’s signing of Victor Lindelof could be a blessing in disguise for Chelsea.
Reports in the Sun two days ago were that Chelsea and United were battling over AS Roma’s German defender Antonio Rudiger. But it now appears almost certain that Jose Mourinho is forcing through a move for Benfica defender Lindelof in January – leaving the road clear for Chelsea to swoop for Rudiger.
The German international missed this summer’s Euros after suffering a bad knee injury, but has recovered to be one of his club’s top players this season.
Roma’s financial issues mean that they are amenable to a sale, even for one of their outstanding players this season. He certainly won’t be cheap, but given the colossal amount of money Chelsea are set to receive for Oscar, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Roman splash the cash to ensure we have the depth required to maintain a three man back line.
