Chelsea have firmed up their pursuit of AS Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko after negotiations for a £35.1 million fee is almost agreed between the two clubs.
A deal in principle has been agreed, according to the Evening Standard, and all that is remained is a mandatory medical.
The hard-tackling midfielder is expected to go through a medical next week ahead of a reported five-year-deal and this development will quicken the sale of Nemanja Matic, who is thought to have Manchester United in his sights.
Jose Mourinho is a huge admirer of the Serbian midfielder having worked with him at Chelsea in their 2014/15 title winning campaign. Matic is reported to be frustrated at Stamford Bridge following the club’s reluctance to renew his contract with two years remaining on it.
Matic was a key player for Conte’s title winning team last season, and as a matter of fact, he played 35 out of 38 games in the Premier League. His replacement, if Conte continues with his interest in other midfielders, would likely be Bakayoko.
Should the move go through, Bakayoko will partner N’Golo Kante in central midfield for the Blues in what will be a devastating combination in the Premier League and Champions League.
Chelsea have secured Champions League football next season and Antonio Conte is looking to beef up his squad ahead of the grueling season.
