According to the well-sourced and reliable Matt Law at the Telegraph, Antonio Conte is considering his future at Chelsea as a dispute over transfer strategy grows into a more serious issue.
Chelsea described themselves as “relaxed” about the situation, and plenty of other journalists are dismissing the corners are silly-season rumours, but these whispers feed into the sense that Chelsea have let the initiative slip this summer as other clubs have secured targets without quibbles. Everton spent upwards of £50m yesterday alone, while Chelsea are yet to confirm even a backup goalkeeper to replace Asmir Begovic.
At this stage there is no need to panic, and there’s still a long summer ahead with plenty of quality on the market. But losing Conte is no joke, and we must hope that this conflict does not develop into anything serious.
A contract offer is on the table for the Italian manager. If he doesn’t accept it soon, we may have a problem.
