Former England international Carlton Palmer has backed Chelsea’s Gary Cahill to be named as the Three Lions’ new captain.
England’s national side have been tossing the armband around following Wayne Rooney’s retirement, but are finally set to name his permanent successor in the skipper’s role.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane has been named as the favourite for the captancy, with Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson also right up there.

But according to his recent interview, Palmer suggests that the captain should be someone who can lead the team from the back, instead of from the attacking end. The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder thinks Cahill is very suitable for the duty, as he’s also the captain at Chelsea and performs constantly for both his club and country.
“I believe the skipper of the team should either be a centre-back or midfield player because they can see the whole picture of the game. Alan Shearer was a little bit different at the time [as England captain] because he led the team from the front.
I would give it to the boy Cahill. He is a good player, a good leader. He has gone about his job quietly and people don’t really mention him a lot now because he is a consistent performer for England and for his club.
Jordan Henderson does really well and is one of those players everybody should look at and marvel about. But, for me, I would give to a midfielder or a centre-back and someone you know is going to play every game.”
