“I want to follow the footsteps of Chelsea’s former Italians” – Davide Zappacosta

Chelsea’s deadline day acquisition Davide Zappacosta has talked about his targets and objectives ahead of his new era at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian wing-back joined the Blues in a £23m deal from Torino, and seems to have enjoyed his time at the club so far. He told in an interview for Chelsea’s matchday programme ahead of the game with Manchester City on Saturday, that he’s hoping to follow the footsteps of former Italians who have graced the side along the years.

The 25-year-old is now the 12th Italian to wear the Blues outfit in Chelsea’s rich history of players. Players such as Gianfranco Zola, Gianluca Vialli, Carlo Cudicini and Roberto di Matteo all spent glorious years at the club, and Zappacosta is keen to eventually be regocnized as one of them.

Gianfranco Zola is one of the greatest Italians to play for Chelsea.

“I’ve noticed there is this long tradition [of Italian players at Chelsea]. I just hope that, like my predecessors from Italy, I can make my mark at Chelsea and win some trophies. That would be a dream come true for me.

I am convinced I am well suited to the style of football in England, probably even more so than Italian football. There is more space because the intensity is higher and the game is much quicker, so I can look to exploit that.”

Zappacosta has already scored his first goal in the Blues shirt, as he stun the whole stadium with a stunning long-range effort against Qarabag FK in this season’s Champions League’s opening game. He’s yet to make a start in the Premier League, but we’re sure that his countryman Antonio Conte will be keen to give him a proper chance once he’s adapted to the Premier League.
