Chelsea better off spending Virgil Van Dijk money on Eden Hazard backup

Manchester City have set their sights on Virgil Van Dijk according to the Guardian.

The Southampton defender has been a long term target of Chelsea’s but after failing to match his club’s asking price a move has never materialised.

Now it looks as though City are willing to pay up for the Dutch international, and Chelsea will miss out on another player they’ve put time and effort into chasing.

But ultimately at this point in Chelsea are well equipped at the back. Antonio Rudiger has proved a good signing, Andreas Christensen has excelled and even Ethan Ampadu showed his potential this week.

Right now, as the 0-0 draw with Everton proved, the Blues are in dire need of an attacking spark, and the money that would otherwise be wasted on Van Dijk would be much better spent on an alternative to Alvaro Morata, or a player who’s capable of removing some of the creative burden from Eden Hazard.
