Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis is a bit of a big mouth. If you’ve been reading this blog for any period of time you’ll know this already.
There’s nothing he likes more than chatting to the press, especially when it comes to things that make him look good.
The best example of that is Chelsea’s pursuit of Kalidou Koulibaly last summer. Antonio Conte was desperate to land the defender, and his team made even increasing bids for him. Napoli kepy rejecting them, and now in an interview quoted in CalcioMercato, de Laurentiis has revealed why.
“What can I do with €58m?”, he mused.
“Money is a means, not an end, the end there is Koulibaly.”
We think he means “what use is €58m euros if I can’t buy a better player than Koulibaly”, which is fair enough and very reasonable. But it would have been helpful for him to tell us that at the start of the window, rather than letting us chase the defender all summer to no avail.
We won’t make the same mistake again this summer… although it’s now a week and counting that we’ve been trying to take their defunct manager off them.
Deja vu?
