Chelsea makes honest assessment of club’s loan system citing England international’s example

Chelsea’s loan system has improved vastly due to the influx of young players in the first team and the example of Ruben Loftus Cheek now with the England national team, according to loan star Lucas Piazon.

The Brazil attacking midfielder has spent the last two seasons with Fulham, and helped them win promotion to the Premier League after a tense two-legged final play-off tie with Aston Villa. His previous spells were at Reading, Malaga, Vitesse Arnhem and Eintract Frankfurt.

It was not just Piazon who excelled in the Blues loan system this season, many others have flourished for their respective temporary clubs.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Piazon admits Chelsea’s policy to send a number of their youth stars on loan to several teams across Europe is paying off after Loftus Cheek’s call up to the England Three Lions’ setup for the World Cup. He also points to the few players with some minutes in the Blues first team.

“I think it is getting better now. Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] is a great example. He is going to the World Cup and he was on loan at Palace. A lot of players did well on their loans and they got a move or are back in the Chelsea first-team. The boys are understanding better what a loan is and what you have to do well to develop for the Chelsea first-team or for another team.

The system is improving and our understanding of the system is also improving. It is working better now. The contact they have with us now is more consistent as well. A few years ago the contact was every once in a while, now it is much more. We feel a little closer to the club.”
