It’s a question that’s been asked many times. How long would Chelsea fans – even those who claim they want a “project” manager in place – be happy to not win, or content for trophies?
If Maurizio Sarri comes in tomorrow and finishes 9th, how many fans would be demanding he goes without a second though?
It’s a pointless question on two levels though. Firstly because the answer will always – very reasonably – be that people would want to see progress and direction in the team, regardless of success. If people are convinced things are on the up, they will weather some bad results – just look at Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Liverpool, which has survived some rocky moments to reach the sunny uplands it now finds itself in.
The other reason it’s a pointless question is that the players we have at the club, and the culture we’ve created, won’t accept anything other than success either. They’ve forced out several managers now, and it seems that the moment they feel things turning sour, they are able to dispose of the incumbent pretty easily.
