Hazard has been one of the best players for Chelsea and in the Premier League in the last one year and has earned himself a shout for the top individual award in the world. He was outshone in the Premier league though by Liverpool hotshot and former Chelsea teammate Mohamed Salah after the Egypt star scored over 40 goals for the Reds in all competitions to win the FWA Player of the Year and PFA Player of the Year, before adding the Premier League Player of the Year award to climax a truly amazing debut season an Anfield.
Salah was joined on the list by the likes of Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
Hazard’s top displays for Belgium at the just ended 2018 World Cup, where the Red Devils finished with a bronze medal, made him no brainer for this nomination list while Luka Modric’s performance for Real Madrid in their Champions League win and also a World Cup final appearance with Croatia, also pushes him in the list.
But those achievements were bettered by Real Madrid and France defender Rafael Varane who added the World Cup to the list of trophies won within the 12-month period of retrospection.
The favorites for the award are Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who again stood out for their individual performances this year.
The youngest of the group is Kylian Mbappe, who scored four goals in the World Cup, one in the final, becoming only the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele did so in 1958.
