Chelsea are reportedly inching close to confirming their second signing this summer and it will be a shock move for most people including the manager, perhaps, as the choice to sign Robert Green as a back up goalkeeper may never sit well with fans.
The goalkeeper seems a spent force and was never even Chelsea quality in his prime. He had good stints with West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers before his nomadic career landed him at Huddersfield, a club he never really touched the ball in an official game.
These reasons above will beg for questions as to why the Blues will take a step as unexpected as this. Mat Lewin, Sports Editor at Yahoo Sport breaks it down nicely in his tweet on the transfer story.
As others, including @chelseayouth, have pointed out. Green signing makes sense in terms of filling the home grown quota. Certainly not one many people will have seen coming though – provided it goes through of course.

So Rob is in to help fill the homegrown quota, but is he the only option available to the Chelsea scouting team? Dan Levene of TalkSport asks critically if the fine trend of hiring goalkeepers experienced at the highest level would be bucked for Green, whose career will most be remembered for his blunders at international level.
Neil Sullivan.
Magnus Hedman.
Mark Schwarzer.
