“A real, bona fide coach has to win things – not just entertain” – Maurizio Sarri discredited by former boss at Napoli

Chelsea’s new head coach Maurizio Sarri has attracted a lot praise for his ingenuity in games and how he sets his teams up across an entire season, following his hugely successfully stint with Napoli in Serie A.

His style of football has seen him considered as one of the best coaches in European football in recent seasons, but his former boss in Naples wasn’t so sure.

Sarri’s style almost brought Napoli to the end of a 28-year wait for a Scudetto after they closed the gap on Juventus as last season’s campaign wore on. Sarri got Napoli playing some of the best attacking football in Europe and drew praise from several top football icons including Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Sarri will be tasked to find a formula to bring attacking football into the Chelsea squad while winning significant trophies in the process but De Laurentiis thinks his former coach might struggle:

“Yes. [he is a genius], but he’s also very set in his ways. He would only use the same 11-13 players and it’s impossible to compete in two competition when you do that.

A real, bona fide coach has to win things – not just entertain.”

Aurelio De Laurentiis, Evening Standard
