Alvaro Morata has welcomed Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic with open arms at Chelsea after admitting he is set to open up Premier League defenses with his ‘quality’.
The midfielder is highly regarded as one of the best midfielders in the next generation, but he struggled with life at Santiago Bernabeu, having had to fend off competition from Luka Modric, Casemiro and Toni Kroos for minutes. Reports from Spain indicated he was pushing for a move out of the club and eventually Chelsea landed him this summer.
He joins Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas, Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko in midfield, but Morata who worked with Kovacic at Real Madrid two seasons ago, tips him for great things in the next few months, insisting he will ‘provide’ a lot ‘of passes for strikers’ to create more winning situations for Chelsea.
“He is a midfielder who is good with the ball, very technical. He can break through the lines with his quality, he can score goals and he has a lot of power in his legs. With him we will win a lot of possession and he has the ability to carry the ball into the final third and provide passes for the strikers.
“He’s a very good player which is very important for us because we need top players.”

Kovacic failed to make the Chelsea team that faced Huddersfield last weekend but will be available in the Blues second Premier League game of the season against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
