Former Chelsea defender John Terry has agreed to join Portuguese top flight side Sporting according to one of the candidates for the presidential role at the club’s speech.
As reported by Goal, Pedro Madeira Rodrigues has revealed he has had talks with the former Chelsea captain to sign for Sporting this summer, but the deal will only happen if he is elected president. Terry is among other top players the Sporting presidential candidate is hoping to land at the club.
The 37-year old left Chelsea in the summer of 2017 and signed for Aston Villa on a one-year contract, but left the Championship club this summer after they failed to make it to the Premier League following their play-off final defeat to Fulham.
Terry will play for a third club in the space of three years if he finally lands in the Portuguese club, but as it stands, it will depend on Rodrigues beating the other five candidates for the role as president this Saturday.
“I’m very close to presenting players for Sporting already. If I wanted to, I could present three players today. I just won’t announce them because I can’t go beyond certain limits. I’m negotiating by the penny. They are foreigners. A left-back, a striker and a great champion – all players who have no contract.
I can say one because I’ve been caught up with him. It’s John Terry, a great champion, a player who does not come to win games, but comes to win games in training. I cannot pay him what he’s used to, but I think he’s very close to being our player. Unfortunately we lost Marchisio, he would be Sporting’s player if I was president last week. On Monday we lost one to Olympiacos.”
