Chelsea signed Jorginho from Napoli last summer from right under the noses of Manchester City who sought to complete a deal for the midfielder.
Just about the time Maurizio Sarri was confirmed new head coach of Chelsea, the Italy international agreed to join the Blues instead of working under Guardiola. Whatever the destination, Jorginho was going to leave Napoli in the summer.
This season, he has been the lynchpin around whom Sarri has built a formidable three-man midfield that continues to dazzle in the early part of the campaign. The Blues dominate possession in almost every game now, and it’s largely owed to Jorginho’s vision and ability to structure his side from the deep-lying midfield position.
That’s something Napoli are missing at the moment. Jorginho was an important player for the Serie A club but despite their relatively poor form in recent months, new head coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed his side are coping rather well without their former talisman, saying the club replaced him well.
“The midfield is very solid. We have a deep squad, with quality. We replaced Jorginho, who was an important player for this team, with many quality and young footballers.”
