Chelsea’s talismanic forward Eden Hazard has revealed he was told by the Blues he could not leave last summer and respected that decision despite inching close to an exit after the World Cup.
It is true Hazard was not the subject of any official bid from Real Madrid last summer, particularly after his impressive outing at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. But that did not mean there was no interest from the Spanish capital. In fact, clues from Hazard’s recent public admission that he may leave for Real signals there may have been some interest – albeit not official – as perhaps Los Blancos preferred to be sure of the player’s interest in moving before making a bid for him.
The Belgium captain admits that although he may have had interest in leaving, his employers were clear they weren’t going to let him go.
“Chelsea were clear with me [in the summer]. I couldn’t leave the club. I accepted it. Anyway… leaving or staying, I was going to be happy. I do not regret this decision at all.
When decisions are made [that you may not like] you can sulk and often you get the last word. But I will never look to clash with the club. ‘Chelsea have given me a lot. I left Lille on good terms and I want to do the same thing here.”

Judging by the form the player is on this season under new boss Maurizio Sarri, whoever put his foot on the ground to prevent Hazard’s departure did the club a huge favor.
